Inexpensive Fall Decorating Ideas
It’s fall, one of the most beautiful seasons in New England. I’ve been admiring all the different colors that come out this time of year and decided to decorate my front door with them. I visited my local farm where they had a bountiful harvest blooming with decorative items that don’t cost a lot, but can look like a million bucks. Here are my inexpensive fall decorating ideas:
Think Outside the Jack-O-Lantern
White pumpkins have been gaining popularity around New England and make a great focal point for any fall display. If you’re into painting, this is a great pumpkin to choose. They can also be used for cooking or carving. This site

Cost: $3-10 depending on size of pumpkin
Decorating with Gourds
Inexpensive and versatile, gourds are a great addition to your fall décor. There are so many creative things you can do with gourds, from table displays to wreaths to centerpieces. For inspiration, check out what Anna did with gourds in her blog post.
Cost: $1 per gourd or buy 3+ for a better deal
Mums the Word
With a variety of colors and sizes to choose from, mums are a gorgeous addition to your fall décor. You can dress up the pot with a straw basket, or plant them in the ground. Visit this website for tips on how to care for your mums.
Cost: $4 – $20 depending on size (I paid an extra $4 for a cute basket)
Welcome Home
There are so many affordable things you can do to brighten up your front steps for fall and welcome people into your. Some other popular items that can add to your display are:
- Cornstalks
- Indian Corn
- Hay
- Welcome Sign
Depending on the layout of your front porch you can go big, or keep it simple. I choose to start small and maybe add to it later. Here is what I came up with for my first time decorating my front steps:
I’ve heard from interior design shows that things look great in threes. Here’s my sets of three’s from what it looks like from a different angle:
I’m no Martha Stewart, but I had a lot of fun picking everything out and jazzing up my bland concrete steps. Since then I broke down and bought an orange sugar pumpkin and placed it next to the red mum at the local farmer’s market so I could have another set of three. The farmer told me after I was done looking at it to make pumpkin pie, which I think I’ll try.
Total Cost: Under $40
Fall is my favorite time of the year. I love pulling up to my house and seeing my beautiful flowers and pumpkins to welcome me home from a long day at work. What fall decorating tips can you share? Please share in the comments below.

I love using gourds to decorate. I especially love those little mini pumpkins! I’ve purchused them for as little as 3 for $1 at places like Xpect. They come in white too! For only a couple dollars, and maybe even using some colorful fall leaves, you can make the inside of your house fall festive too!
I leave the mini pumpkins plain or use a black marker to pen on jack’o lantern faces on the orange ones and turn the white ones into ghosts! I’ve also painted faces on them with the kids as a fun fall crafts project.

I found a picture on Pintrest for a fall decoration that I loved. It only cost a few dollars and I have gotten a ton of compliments. All I did was get a glass vase and pour dry beans in different colors into it. Each bag was only about $1.00. I chose a green bean, red bean, and yellow corn kernels. I am going to attempt to add a picture so you can see how nice the stripes of color looked. Not sure if it will work though.
